校名Heriot-Watt是為紀念蘇格蘭科技、商業和教育史上兩位偉人：喬治•海瑞特；以及發明蒸汽機的詹姆士•瓦特。是第一所將工業科學園建於校區內的大學。工程和科學研究兩個領域在所有蘇格蘭大學中居領先地位。

城市簡介
有"北方的雅典"、"歐洲最美麗的城市"之美譽的愛丁堡一點兒也不像英國其他的城市，它是一個擁有如倫敦、巴黎般熱鬧氣氛與喧騰刺激的首都城市，但它卻又是個小得既友善又親切的地方。在市區可見到蘇格蘭最好的文化、建築和社交生活，舊城(或稱中古城)在此已屹立七個世紀，現今則是各類酒館、餐廳和商店聚集之處。著名的愛丁堡城堡俯臨著舊城，城堡下東西向的王子街是穿越愛丁堡市的主要街道，也是愛丁堡新舊城市區的分格線。南方為舊城區，主要是十六世紀的古建築，王子街花園南端聳立的愛丁堡城堡是古城市中心，位於北邊的新城，有著歐洲保存最完善、綿延最廣的喬治王時代建築物。愛丁堡距離美麗的海灘和海岸線亦不遠，另外，不到一天的旅程即可到達蘇格蘭高地欣賞最原始未受破壞的自然景觀。交通相當發達的愛丁堡擁有完善的交通網，搭火車至倫敦只需四個半小時，搭飛機僅需一小時，而從愛丁堡機場也可搭機前往英國及歐洲各大城市。
